I'm starting with the man (woman) in the mirror

i think its time to make a change
a friend of mine recently started a blog entitled the year of the beast
because she's ready to make a change..
i've been thinking about making a change for quite some time now
yet sat here doing nothing
well not really nothing because i do a lot of new fun stuff
but i haven't really made any RADICAL changes
and today marks the day of radical
supernatural
supercaliprucialidomexicalymusica -- whatever that super long word is turned into an adjective -- changes
i'm gonna do it
so i'm going vegetarian starting next month -- i'd said june first, but why wait for the inevitable?
going vegetarian is going to be really hard even though i was pretty much raised as one
my mom has been poultry and bovine less for 10 years now i believe?
i just think that it's better for my health etc...

and i'm going to do the BC
for those who don't know, BC stands for Big Chop and one does it
when they're going from artificially straightened --better known as chemically straightened, permed or relaxed hair -- to one's natural texture..
i'm nervous yet excited.. i'm totally acting like i've never done it before
i was remembering that i had done it a long time ago
i believe i was in 10th gr or so, so like 2005?
anyways, now its different because anyone who knows me knows that i have a hair obsession
and a perm addiction
some like to feel my tracks
(because they're wack)
so this is might just kill me, the combination of meatless dining and permless styling --DEADLY

solange knowles recently did her BC and now rocks a very sexy TWA -- teeny weeny afro -- again, DEADLY
black women have this ability to look good in so many different hair styles
and that's the only thing that's keeping
me sane in this natural hair adventure
then again, its gonna be cheaper for me in the long run --
HEY HEY HEY --

oh and the last thing that i forgot to mention is that
i've decided to do lent this year..
no i'm not catholic
but even so,
i've never given up something that i really like
and i've never actually tested my will power,
so now i'm gonna do it (year of actually doing stuff right?)
i'm going to give up SUGAR for lent.
i must apologize in advance to my friends and family for my behavior in the next 40 days
because i know someone will have murder on their minds at some point during my journey

writing this is really hard because it means that
i actually have to go through with this stuff!

so i'll be transitioning my hair for 3 months
then we'll see what it looks like..
i'll be going veg forever/permanently for the first time ever
hopefully there will be little back sliding
thankfully backsliding doesn't mean that i have to start over
because just like when you sin,
God erases the sins when you ask for forgiveness
and keeps no records of wrongs
therefore i will keep no records of wrong myself
but treat them as stepping stones, or trampolines, rather
to further me into the next galaxy,
or chapter,
whatever
pray for me for this no sugar thing -- that's all i have to say about that

many more changes to come this year..
this is just the begining!
i'll keep you guys posted and entertained.

very entertained.

Gorgeous!

i'm completely in love with this band that my brother found...
this is seems to always happen to me,
my brother finds band, and then i fall in love
i must fall in love easily it seems..
but anyways, about this band, they are the perfect combination of soft rock,
ska, jazz and piano!
just the ska and the piano rock tones kill me, so when they add the reggae to the mix
it becomes a little bit too much and i find myself needing composure.

enjoy this tune, its a gift from me to you
or rather from them to you...
who cares who it's from, just listen to the freaking song!

I'm in love.....

I have start by saying that I've fallen in love. Have you ever met people that you meshed so well with that even when you're feeling angry towards them you still want to keep talking to them and they can still make you smile?
Well I've met that.. I wish it would've been in one person but no, I've met that person in 4 people together. I've fallen in love with 4 guys at once, guys that keep me sane, keep me laughing, but most importantly keep me grounded.
Together we form the Ottawa chapter of a poetry/performance group called B.R.H.I.N., these guys write fabulous poetry and I am privileged to be audience to this sheer talent.
Yesterday, February 6th 2010 marked the first Black History Month Gala of the University of Ottawa where we had the privilege of performing, not only in front of our fellow classmates but in front of noted guests such as Her Honourable Excellence the Governor of Canada Michaelle Jean, her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond, and various MPs.
Our piece fell into the portion of the night dedicated toward paying tribute to Haiti, and we took our guests through history with our piece. Starting them off with a typical day in the African hunter's day in the 1300s, and ending it with Haiti's national anthem and the present day's tragedy.
The evening ended with some awesome tunes being spun by the Dj of the night first taking us back with some Motown classics, as well as some of our beloved fallen's tunes (MJ). We had the privilege of having one of Carleton's prominent fraternities present amongst our midsts regaling us with their "signature" step dance during the dance party.

But for the rest of the evening I got to dance with Netu (resident poet and dance teacher, knows quite a bit about being "suave mente" in life an on the dance floor),

Mambwe (resident poet and mastermind, aka hilarious in a weird understated manner),
Kenny (didn't know he had moves on the dance floor like that but nonetheless resident poet and Kenny).
Unfortunately due to prior engagements our fourth member was unable to attend the festivities but he still held that special place in our hearts, Zebb (resident poet and Justice, some call him african).

All in all, it was a great night, I'm a happy girl in love with 4 lovely men and that's that.

And here I am

They were brought here
And here I am
On ships they brought them
And here I am
For years mistreated
And here I am
And for what?
Was it to find better land,
Or rather to fill their pockets and recount tales?
Tales of victory and defeat.
Victory and defeat over what?
Over whom?
Victory over the native living his life?
Raising his family and raising their children,
the only way they knew how?
Defeat over the black man?
The black man they forced to build their land?
The black woman they raped and pillaged?
Yet out of every disaster
Every sad story, every sad song
we're told we can find good.
What good do we find here?
Is it even possible...
They forced us here
But let's force ourselves to make a difference.

yup..

Haiti Cherie

There was an earthquake last tuesday
My uncle passed away on his birthday
Many say that this is what they deserved,
but does anyone really deserve such devastation?
Does anyone ever deserve so much pain?
I hears them say it was the wrath of God,
but I beg the question, was this really God?
Did he bring this pain upon humanity,
or did we bring it upon ourselves?
He predicted, He said that calamity upon calamity
would come upon this world.
But remember 2 Kings 22
Where He says: my people have forsaken me,
they have burned offerings upons strange idols
and so my wrath will be felt against this place
and will not be quenched
Is this the case here?
Is He making an example of us?
Did we deserve it?
What does this say about us?
What does this say about God?
God's word is yes and amen.
He who hates sin but LOVES the sinner...
The fear of the Lord is our strength.
Even during adversity he showeth mercy.
You must learn from this tragedy,
I must learn from this calamity,
You and I have learned and will keep on learning,
Christ's return is soon,
this is only the beginning of birthpains:
see that ye be not troubled, says He, for all these things must come to pass
but the end is not yet.
If the end is not yet, this must be just the beginning
This is a wake up call: for me, for you, for we.

Haiti cherie.

Fashion over Function -- or the other way around?

last year i picked fashion

i was making very little a paycheck working on the
university campus
but one day i saw these boots and i was in love!
finally something that would fit my calves..
way over my budget but i didn't care
i knew they weren't going to last the whole winter
yet i still couldn't find my care face..
these complimented my soul, my figure, my style,
completed my being.

i took my friend with me to the mall one day
surrendered my entire paycheck
my paltry income
in order to receive more, my beauties, my jewels
my babies.

i was so utterly in love that even through the bus strike
walking for 45 minutes in -40 C temperatures
i would STILL look down to my frozen feet and
i knew they were covered in beauty.

last year i picked fashion over function
by the end of the season, i'm pretty sure i didn't have any toes
i mean i certainly couldn't FEEL them
oh and the fashion that i had picked over the function?
it was gone.. by spring those boots had gone from hot to
not.

so what are we doing this year?
are we going for fashion over function
its a hard decision for a self proclaimed fashionista such as myself..
(yes self proclaimed.. actually maybe not, i mean Halimo called me a fashionista
today.. so i might not be so self proclaimed
i may have some cred
however small)

FUNCTION!
hot damn lady! you live in ottawa, not in florida.. or even
new york
sooo i'm pretty sure the decision is easy to make
no more winter days entrain de grelotter (im sorry english people.. i couldn't
find a better expression)
i guess i could say freezing my ass off...

so for people who don't want to die from
the God-awful chill in this city come winter time
you have these options:

BULKY yet cute :D
well that's my humble opinion anyways

if you live anywhere in Canada
for goodness sakes.. get some real boots!

We're taking it back - - to Canada of course

we love vegetarian leather (for those who do not like real leather)
we love leather (for those who don't care)

we Canadians.. every year
(or so)
we have to invest into a new winter jacket
(or several new winter jackets)
every year... because it gets cold, duh! (shut up vancouver, we don't want to hear it)
so every year
(or so)
the search for that sexy jacket comes, we're tryna look cute
(whether it be for hitting the slopes or looking cute
walking down Rideau St. [for u Ottawa ppl])

we hit up stores like sport experts, aritzia,
and the like in the search for winter wear...
some of us hit up Danier leather (once again, we love our leather)
but here's another option
a new option
an option with a little je ne sais quoi on Danier, sport experts
and aritzia (especially aritzia, because it seems like all the girls in this town wear the
saaame jacket in winter in one of three colours:
grey, brown, and the ubiquitous black)

hailing from Montreal is a line
that holds very dear to my heart
dear to my pocket
my pocket is directly linked to my heart and therefore
making this line double-y dear to my heart:
RUDSAK
i look at this and all i can say is HEEEEAAAT!!!!!!!!!!

I mean look at this

and this

and last but not least

So this year you may want to reconsider, when
prompted by habit, entering into a sports expert
or into aritzia
instead: go online(just google it, i've already given the brand
enough free advertising as it is) find the closest
location
or shop online (one option being just as convenient as the other... and plus
there's always ebay)

just sayin....

Yo!

NON-FASHION CONTENT ALERT!!
i had to put the disclamer there just in case someone
got mad saying, "i want my daily dose
of canadian something or other!"
well too bad buddy.. today i
feel like talking about something else ;)

remember when we used to watch kids tv
(for those of us who have actually stopped watching
it)
remember how the shows that we
watched growing up were so good.. and after
an episode of our favorite show, we'd always be
excited
for school the next day to talk about how
one power ranger was or favorite
or how michaelangelo was the cutest ninja turtle?
(yes im sorry Mrs. Flynn [gr12 english teacher] i know that that was a very
very
extremely long run-on sentence)
anywho.. and then, suddenly we grew up and then
it seemed as if the kids that came after us only had crap
to watch on tv (maybe not crap, just
very
unexciting tv)

until this moment, with the advent of Yo Gabba Gabba
is there a better kid's show out there?
is there a better show (period) out there?
i don't know, its tough to judge

this definitely has to be one of the ultimate kids shows
this show combines hip hop
nutrition
beatboxing
being nice
into a song...
WTF?? how freaking awesome is that...?
not only that, their tunes are adult friendly, i mean
check out the party in my tummy remix with the Ting Tings (youtube that shit)
talk about HEAT!
thats a big tune! i don't care who you are
you can be at a house party or in a club
that record drops and its over..

which other kids show can honestly say that about
a song that they just performed on the show
and that is not the song you hear every single time
when the show starts [brain fart, i can't remember the term
for it]?

... if you can tell me, i'll give you 5 bucks...
i swear

[and yes it's a wee nation, yes we have
one of the largest lands but one of the smallest presences]

how could we forget our beloved twins: Dean and Dan Caten, makers of Dsquared2 if you do not know who they are... get at them and get at the quick! they are geniuses and have made their mark, their brand is now a household brand and they know how to represent their country, i love people who can make a statement!

An Ebay Compulsion

So the other instead of doing my work
i decided to go on ebay...
mmmm.. ebay..
My friend had told me that she was checking out some
comme des garcons wear on ebay, i was just curious
to see what she was planning on purchasing so i went...
as i was scrolling through the clothes and then i realized
that not all of them was by comme des garcons...
Scrolling down for as long as i had been, all the names seemed the same
but they weren't!!
And since the clothes all were nice, it didn't matter...

The whole point of this diatribe is:

Check out garcon comme le fashion and garcon comme la mode on ebay
awesome awesome awesome stuff!!!!
i mean check out this vest
that would probably cost u a bunch of monies (yes i said monies) in stores.. :'(
Actually since i live in Ottawa, i probably wouldn't even be able
to find such a vest here...(such is my lot)

AND LOOK AT THESE SHORTS THAT GET ME EXCITED EVERY TIME i LOOK AT THEM!!
they also have them in blue.. they are to DIE for ;)

You never know, the next thing you may see me wear could come
from, there... just sayin

A Simple Explanation

Soo when i show people my blog the most recurring question is... what is skyvvys?
Skyvvys is a play on the word skivvies which means underpants... (i write it skyvvys only because the url inmyskivvies.blogspot was already taken)
And then when i tell people what skyvvys (or skivvies means) they usually wonder (never outloud) why would Lynn want to be in her underwear??
WELL guys... here's the explanation:

i'm not really in my panties, really
i'm just using this as a way of showing what's real here in ottawa
or what's real wherever!
so in my skyvvys really means "on the real"!!
get it? got it? good!

now no more questions...haha

skyvvys ;)
